Willard O. Wylie began his career in the philatelic industry, joining Mekeel's Weekly Stamp News company in 1898. He advanced to editor of the Weekly Philatelic Era in 1903. In 1913, Wylie co-founded Severn-Wylie-Jewett Company and concurrently served as vice president and managing editor of Mekeel's Weekly Stamp News. He also managed the publication of approximately fifty handbooks through Mekeel's Handbooks from 1913 to 1930. Wylie was recognized for his contributions to the field, being named Editor Emeritus in 1940 and inducted into the American Philatelic Society Hall of Fame in 1945.
