Peter Kyros was born in Portland, Maine, to Greek immigrants. He completed his early education in Portland Public Schools and pursued higher education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, followed by a Bachelor's degree from the United States Naval Academy and a law degree from Harvard Law School. Kyros served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1953, achieving the rank of lieutenant. After his military service, he was admitted to the bar in 1957 and practiced law in Portland, Maine, including a stint as counsel to the Maine Public Utilities Commission.
