Neal Hunt graduated from Ravenscroft School and earned a BS in Spanish from Hampden–Sydney College, followed by an MBA from Wharton School. He began his career in commercial real estate lending and later founded his own real estate development firm. Hunt transitioned into public service, serving on the Raleigh Planning Commission and winning two terms on the Raleigh City Council. He was subsequently elected to the North Carolina Senate, where he has been re-elected multiple times and currently serves as Co-Chair of the Appropriations/Base Budget standing committee.
