Mike Hatch graduated from East High School and attended the University of Minnesota, Duluth, before earning a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Minnesota Law School. He began his career as a trial lawyer and later transitioned into public service, becoming State Chair of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party in 1980. Hatch was appointed commissioner of the state Department of Commerce in 1983 and subsequently elected state attorney general in 1998 and 2002. After a gubernatorial run in 2006, he returned to private law practice and co-founded a law firm in 2019.
