Lionel Van Deerlin graduated from Oceanside High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from the University of Southern California, where he served as editor of the Daily Trojan. He served in the United States Army Field Artillery during World War II, including overseas service in Italy, and worked as a staff sergeant for the Stars and Stripes newspaper. Post-war, Van Deerlin pursued a career in journalism, working in Minneapolis and Baltimore before returning to San Diego, where he became city editor of the San Diego Daily Journal. He made two unsuccessful bids for Congress, subsequently working as a newscaster and news director for XETV.
