Leo Jaramillo, raised in Española, New Mexico, holds a Bachelor of Arts in mass communication and journalism and a Master of Arts in education and curriculum design. He began his career as a writer and producer for KRQE before transitioning to teaching. Since 2003, Jaramillo has held various roles at Los Alamos National Laboratory, including communications specialist, staff assistant, training specialist, recruiter, financial analyst, and chief of staff. He was elected to the Rio Arriba County Commission in 2018 and has since served as chair. In 2020, he defeated incumbent Richard Martinez for the New Mexico Senate seat and later won the general election, assuming office in January 2021.
