John F. Dockweiler completed his early education in parochial schools and pursued acting and theater during his youth. He earned a degree from Loyola College of Los Angeles and subsequently graduated from the University of Southern California. Dockweiler furthered his legal education at Harvard University, after which he was admitted to the bar. He began his law practice in Los Angeles in 1922.
