Early in his career, he gained experience through internships and positions with state senators and the Suffolk County Executive. Conte transitioned to a legislative role, serving as an aide before being elected to the New York State Assembly in 1988, where he maintained a long tenure. His career was marked by a significant transition when he stepped away from public office to focus on his health.
