Crystal Peoples-Stokes holds a B.S. in Elementary Education and a Master’s in Student Personnel Administration from Buffalo State College, and an honorary Doctorate from Medaille College. Peoples-Stokes began her career in public service in 1993, serving in the Erie County Legislature and later being elected to the New York State Assembly in 2002. Over the years, she has held various leadership positions, including Chair of the Assembly Subcommittee on Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises, Chair of the Assembly’s Committee on Governmental Operations, and Chair of the New York State Legislative Women’s Caucus. Peoples-Stokes was appointed Majority Leader of the New York State Assembly in 2018, becoming the first woman and first African American to hold the position.
