Cody Mitchell retired from the military in 2012 and subsequently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Presbyterian College. He holds a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina, which he obtained in 2011. Mitchell became a law partner at a prominent firm that year and later served as a municipal judge in several South Carolina towns from 2013 to 2021. He was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2022.
