Personal Background
Charles Thone was born in Hartington, Nebraska, and graduated from Hartington High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II in various capacities, including as a non-commissioned officer and officer. Thone attended the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where he was involved in the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and sponsored Johnny Carson. He graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1950, established a private legal practice in Lincoln, and served as deputy secretary of state of Nebraska. Thone also held leadership roles in the Nebraska Junior Chamber of Commerce and worked as an Administrative Assistant to U.S. Senator Roman Hruska. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1970, representing Nebraska's 1st congressional district and serving on the House Select Committee on Assassinations.
