Barbara Buono graduated from Nutley High School and holds a B.A. in Political Science and a J.D. from Rutgers. She began her public service career on the Metuchen Borough Council and Planning Board, later winning a special election to the State Assembly. Buono transitioned to the New Jersey Senate, where she became the first woman elected Majority Leader. She has also advised a mayor on the West Coast.
